SDG 12: Prevent Food Waste

  • Reading time:3 mins read

The stark contrast between the material footprint per capita in high-income and low-income countries, with the former being 10 times larger, raises concerns about sustainable consumption and production patterns. As we work towards halving per capita food waste and losses by 2030, the world’s current progress is inadequate, underscoring the urgency to prioritise responsible consumption and production.

Globally, approximately a third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted, while millions of people struggle afford a quality meals every second day. The EU is estimated to waste 59 million tonnes of food per year, suggesting that primary production and manufacturing account for 29% of food waste, retail and distribution account for 7%, while households generate a whopping 55%!

Here at Freeworld, we take pride in our low levels of food waste. In the past year, this figure has dropped to below 0.1%! To achieve this, before considering the disposal of goods, we explore options for repurposing. In some cases, we even consider reclassifying items as animal feed so that the food can be utilised as an alternative to contributing to global food waste, aligning with SDG 12.
