Taking a pounding?

– Pound has suffered largest drop for over a year in light of referendum calling

– Government remains divided on whether leaving the EU is a good idea. Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, stared that the UK will have a ‘better future’ without the EU, whilst top conservative MPs such as defence secretary Michael Fallon, think staying in the EU would be better for ‘security’.

– The pound fell 1.65% to $1.4167, the biggest one-day drop since 2 January, 2015.

– David Cameron announced on that the EU referendum would be held on 23 June after he came back from Brussels with a renegotiation of Britain’s EU membership.

– It is said that the pound will continue to weaken

We have started to receive a growing number of enquiries already from clients who are struggling to secure further quantities

This crop is 400.000 Tons shorter than last year! So, if like last year the situation is repeated, it may be much harder in the face a smaller crop.

Production/Hulling capacities haven’t increased in general within Bulgaria.

Alternative origins, such as Ukraine, are principally dedicated to crushing/inshell, as opposed to hulling. Plus, Ukraine has recently And the big crops of sunflowers in Ukraine and Russia will only find their way into the oil industry, no single kilogram is for hulling. Beside that, Ukraine has built up a new tax for exporting sunflowers, so their volume will stay in their country for crushing.

Adam talks about the latest in hazelnuts and flame raisins :-

There are similarities with both the Turkish hazel market and the Chilean raisins. Farmers kept supply of hazels low due to keep pricing up for the first 5 months of the crop, but now find themselves still sitting on over 50% of the crop. Pricing will be weak unless we see any adverse weather. Good time to cover.

Flames are difficult at the moment. The northern crop is down and farmers are expecting more pesos for their fruit. Demand in Europe remains weak so pricing for the 2016 crop remains uncertain

– High prices are reflection of tight supplies
– The first and new crop is not in yet, and will come in after the holiday. We have a clear indication of what the prices will be like after the holiday
– Last few years has seen flat prices but with a 15c increase each year. Generally quite a flat market.
– Some of the smaller packers are struggling with finances with tight payment terms so they need to make rash sales sometimes
– Will improved food safety requirements change the momentum of this industry, and how?
– Will a 2-market syndrome emerge?
– If you need cashews delivered Feb/March you are not going to get anything shipped next month because of the holiday season, so keep an eye on your stock.
